10 Future Versions Of Heroes BETTER Than The Original

6. Superman Beyond

Superman Beyond is a future version of Superman, but how does he stack up to his younger self?

Superman Beyond wanted to retire and explore the galaxy. He's getting older - and frankly he's tired. He still does what's right when he sees injustice, though.

Being Superman, as he puts it, "is a lifelong commitment." When the future Man of Steel decides to pick back up his life in Metropolis, he discovers that future tech has made the police nearly as powerful as he is now. Is Superman irrelevant in a world where technology bridges the gap between humans and superhumans?

The original Superman was nearly invulnerable (when kryptonite wasn't involved), had a strong support system (friends, loving family and a girlfriend/wife depending on continuity), and was beloved by the people of Metropolis. For the older Superman, age has begun to wear down his powers and many of the people he cares for, including Lois Lane, have already passed away.

Superman Beyond's internal struggle to find himself and his place in a world that has moved on without him is deeply human and emotionally wrought. He might not be a better hero when it comes to battle (the original Superman would surely beat him on strength alone), but Superman Beyond takes the things we love about the original Last Son of Krypton, and allows him to have a complex vulnerability that shapes how he behaves a hero.

West loves pop culture, movies, comics and TV-shows just as much as you do. Probably. Since you're reading this. Also, she has a cat. He's pretty awesome.
