10 Future Versions Of Heroes BETTER Than The Original
3. Terry McGinnis - Batman Beyond
Terry McGinnis is the alter ego of Batman in a future where Bruce Wayne has retired. Originally created for the animated series Batman Beyond, he was eventually introduced into the main DC Comics continuity. But is he the better Batman?
Bruce is wealthy, comes from a life of privilege, and often isolates himself. Terry is a troubled teen, spent time in juvie, and is a part of the community he protects in a way old-money Bruce can't. Terry is also a good judge of character and is willing to trust people - a strength the original Batman struggled with.
While both Terry and Bruce deal with trauma, Bruce's entire identity is built around the death of his parents. He plays the part of wealthy playboy, but his true self is the detective and violent vigilante hiding in the shadows.
For Terry, being Batman is only part of who he is. His mother and younger brother are still alive and he has a long-term healthy romantic relationship with Dana Tan. Terry learns to successfully balance being a hero and having a normal life. Bruce is singular in his drive for justice. Terry is complicated, he sees value in the many facets of who he is.
Bruce Wayne will always be the one true Dark Knight, but Terry is a strong fighter, emotionally mature, and has access to fun future tech that didn't exist in the original Batman's time... but Terry McGinnis's greatest advantage is that he has a mentor: Bruce Wayne himself.
