Avengers: Endgame has arrived. Depending on when this article has been published, fans will either be waiting eagerly in line for the next film, or will be on their way out digesting the predictably emotional fallout. Whatever the context, Earth's Mightiest Heroes are a staple of the Marvel Universe, and no matter what fate awaits them on the big screen, that doesn't change how they're perceived off it.

The Avengers have been going strong since the swinging sixties, during the peak of Marvel's bullpen era. The first story featured Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Ant-Man and the Wasp fending off against Loki, but in the years since pretty much every Marvel hero has featured on the team in one form or another. From street-level vigilantes to cosmic do-gooders from distant galaxies, the team has taken on some unique forms over the years, all no-less impressive than the original lineup spotlighted in 1963.

Be that as it may, there are certain Avengers who've managed to win more hearts and minds while on the team compared to others. An important delineation must be made in that, while the following figures are among Marvel's greatest characters, this list is about how good they were as Avengers specifically. Spider-Man might be a great hero who served on the Avengers, but is he one of the team's greatest members? Maybe not.
