Carol Danvers is a name mainstream audiences will only just be getting familiar with, but for those who've read the comics, the character's ascension to the spotlight has been long overdue.
Danvers, who's gone by various identities over the years but now operates solely under the Captain Marvel mantle, has been going strong since her initial debut in the late sixties. Perhaps more synonymous with the X-Men for the bulk of her career, her history intertwined with that of Rogue's, Carol has since gone on to adopt a closer relationship with the Avengers, a journey reflected by her current depiction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Whether it's under her Warbird identity or as Captain Marvel, Carol has cemented herself as a true leader of the Avengers over the last two decades, and fully deserves to be considered one of the team's strongest characters, not just in terms of her power, but in how she carries herself amongst her teammates.
Fortunately for fans, Captain Marvel's best years are still to come. Given just how great her resurgence at the start of the decade was, that's ample reason for readers to be excited.
