When people see the classic symbol of the House of El, they imagine the wearer of that symbol to treasure human life above all others.

However, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl has constantly struggled with being an alien forced by her cousin to protect a race of people weaker than her in every way.

Supergirl actually grew up on Krypton, so she had to fully deal with the loss of her entire civilization, and wasn't able to experience humanity from a young age like her cousin.

Thus it became increasingly difficult to be asked to protect a civilization that actively hates themselves for being slightly different, along with any so-called outsiders. This hatred became so hard to fight against that at one point Supergirl just up and left Earth to wander the stars and take a break from humans.

Her hatred for humanity became so bad that she actually attracted a Red Lantern Ring and became a Red Lantern for a time. She has come back to Earth, but she still feels isolated and disconnected from the insignificant beings she flies above every single day.
