10 Greatest DC Comics Of The 21st Century, Not Starring Batman

3. Gotham Central

Superman Red Son
DC Comics

Gotham Central takes a simple premise and makes it one of DC's greatest comics in recent years. Instead of focusing on the Bat-Family, Gotham Central focuses on the police in Gotham City.

Unfortunately, sales were never very strong on this comic, but it has gained a fanbase in the years since it was published. Written by Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker, they prove that any characters can be interesting in the right hands.

The art by Michael Lark is outstanding. He has been a long time collaborator with Brubaker, and he provides the dirty and grim pencils needed for this story. Although other artists would come onto the book, Lark set the tone.

Having lesser known characters go up against Batman's rogues gallery creates a lot of tension in this book. In a regular Batman title, it's inevitable that Batman will find a way to win. With characters who may not survive to the end of the story, Gotham Central adds an element missing from most DC comics.
