Sandman was the 75-issue series from prolific author Neil Gaiman and a number of gifted artists throughout the run, including Sam Keith, Jill Thompson, and Charles Vess on the award-winning issue #19 “ A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The series starred Morpheus, aka Dream of the Endless, a family of anthropomorphic personifications of various metaphysical concepts. Dream is the Lord of the Dreaming, the place where all sentient beings go when they sleep and dream. In his realm, both pleasant dreams and nightmares are his domain and all the creatures of dreams are his subjects.

Sandman was unique due to the fact that it could be a vehicle to tell tales from any number of genres. Character-driven stories with a historical context, classic fantasy-based stories, modern and gothic horror stories, and even a few superheroes could be found in the pages of Sandman. At its core, Sandman is a story about stories.

For fans of horror, they need look no further than “24 Hours” where minor Justice league villain Doctor Destiny uses Dream’s stolen ruby to manipulate a small group of people in a diner for 24 hours for his own amusement. Or in “Collectors”, one of the nightmares that wandered out of the Dreaming during Morpheus’ imprisonment was the guest speaker at a convention of serial killers that he had inspired by his exploits, to name but two.
