10 Greatest Jack Kirby Characters
7. Thor
Contrary to what you may have originally thought, Kirby did not originally draw Thor for Marvel Comics. After he had left Marvel due to not getting fairly compensated for his work on Captain America, Kirby got a contract with DC where he drew a version of Thor. This was just a precursor for what was going to come.
Kirby was a massive fan of mythology and tried to incorporate that into his Marvel Comics stories. In 1962, Thor would first be seen in Journey Into Mystery #83. Thor was featured there until getting his own self-titled comic, but - more importantly - the character fundamentally changed Marvel Comics into being more than just about the world we know, by bringing other realms and legends into a world of heroes.
Thor took the idea of the superhero as it then existed and created a modern myth in the process. He was certainly unique in the sci-fi oriented pages of Marvel, as most of their heroes at that point had come from science gone wrong. Indeed, the writer's work on Thor can currently be felt on the screen as well as off it, with the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok imitating many of the images Kirby created during his time on the character.
