10 Greatest Splash Pages In Marvel Comic Book History
1. Spider-Man No More - The Amazing Spider-Man #50
Getting out of bed on the first alarm is a hard enough task for a human, so just imagine how tough it must be for a superhero!
Comic book history is full of examples of characters throwing in the towel, but perhaps the most famous one was immortalised by John Romita Sr. in The Amazing Spider-Man #50 from 1967.
After the pressure of being a hero, combined with Aunt May's ill health, his falling grades, and J. Jonah Jameson's continued attacks on him, Peter Parker decides to give up being the web-slinger altogether.
Whilst out walking one night, he dumps his trusty Spidey suit in a trash can and walks away.
This is pure art right here.
The suit lying crumpled in the foreground, Peter skulking away hunched over, the rain coming down hard, it captures the mood of the moment exactly right.
Spider-Man just quit! Of course this panel was going to be dramatic!
This splash page really does speak a thousand words and is a great example of the power that comic book art can have over human emotions.
And don't worry, Peter gets his mojo back by the end of the issue.
