10 Horror Comics Worse Than Your Nightmares
5. The Enigma Of Amigara Fault
Junji Ito is a comic book (alright, manga) creator with such a mind that this list could well have consisted of solely his work. From ghost stories to walking fish, whatever one's personal favourite flavour of horror is, Junji Ito has you covered. However, few are as bizarre - or utterly nightmarish - as his Enigma of Amigara Fault.
A short story at the end of his Gyo series (the one about the walking fish), the Enigma of Amigara Fault sees an earthquake strike the ancient Amigara mountain. Inside the fault, citizens discover a series of perfectly human-sized holes, embedded deep into the mountain.
One by one, the onlookers discover 'their' holes - that is, the hole in the rock shaped exactly like themselves. Compelled to climb inside, the citizens disappear into the mountain, only to eventually emerge on the other side - horribly distorted and stretched out.
Which is a lot of words to describe the indescribable; a story which is better experienced than described. Like the you-shaped holes of Amigara fault, one can't help but be mesmerised by this, Junji Ito's most discomforting story.
