It's kinda hard to not be scary when you are the literal anti-Christ.

Although Hellboy isn't necessarily the son of the actual Christian Devil, he's close enough to make any difference irrelevant. He's a demonic red creature sent to our world to bring about the apocalypse...and he talks and sounds like a blue collar longshoreman. Yeah, like with Boston Brand, much of his menace is intentionally undercut by everything about his behavior and inflections.

But if you're on the BPRD's to-die-list, then that doesn't matter, because Hellboy is the scariest mother lover your could run into. Practically unstoppable, with a stone right hand that can stop an oncoming train - and an affinity for revolvers the size of normal people's heads - Hellboy is one hero you don't want to run into if you're something that goes bump in the night.

Yeah, if you're on his side, then Hellboy is about as threatening as a labradoodle with a little bow on top of his head. But if you mean the BPRD or the greater human race harm, then Hellboy is your worst damn nightmare.
