3. Nightcrawler Becomes Pope

Invisible Woman Malice
Marvel Comics

Despite being hated by religious zealots for his demonic appearance, Nightcrawler is a devout Catholic. When a group called The Church of Humanity told the blue-and-furry X-Man they'd help him become an ordained minister, Nightcrawler was thrilled.

Little did he know that The Church of Humanity had an ulterior motive. They wanted to make Nightcrawler become the Pope! Once it was revealed the leader of Vatican was a devilish-looking mutant, the Church of Humanity would claim this was a sign the Rapture was coming and that humanity must destroy mutants and abandon the Catholic Church.

Okay, where do I even begin? Catholics don't believe in the Rapture nor is it ever mentioned in the Bible. Also, priests can't become the Pope; only cardinals can, but only after decades of serving the church. Also, if the Church of Humanity isn't a part of the Vatican, how would they have the power to ordain the Pope?

What makes all this more non-sensical is the fact that the cult's leader, The Supreme Pontiff, is a mutant herself! It is never explained why she is trying to wipe out her own kind.
