Subtlety is hardly Kevin Smith's strength, but he took it to a whole new level in the miniseries The Widening Gyre. A complete clash of styles meant the usually dark and brooding Batman was reduced to crude jokes and a very awkward retcon.

This wild story features a team up with Baphomet. Unsurprisingly, the big twist in the story is that the new hero turns out to be the villain Onomatopoeia. Aside from the predictable reveal, the story is a complete mess. In one issue, Poison Ivy creates a new "herb"and manages to dose the Bat, causing the Caped Crusader to go on a paranoia fuelled series of ridiculous events, including beating his the girlfriend, Silver St. Cloud, because he thinks she's a robot.

Not content with that dumpster fire of a story, Smith decided to go back to Frank Miller's seminal Year One story and provide the worst retcon in history. While confronting criminals, the Dark Knight sets off an explosive but misjudged it's effects. This causes what he described as "a bladder spasm", otherwise known as wetting his bat-pants.

Unsurprisingly, as is a common theme with Smith, this 12 issue run was never completed and ended at issue 6. By that point however the damage was more than done, leaving one of the Bat's best stories well and truly soiled.
