10 Incredible Batman Comics (That Don't Star Bruce Wayne)

3. Batwoman: Elegy

Gotham Central 1
DC Comics

After various Bat-titles went on hiatus following Bruce Wayne's "death", Detective Comics came back in a big way with #854 through #857 focusing solely on Batwoman. This was a huge leap into making the new incarnation of Batwoman a force to be reckoned with. While she had only been seen previously in the sensational year-long weekly series 52, this series finally allowed for her to take the spotlight, with Greg Rucka and J.H. Williams III creating something truly special.

The plot follows Batwoman as she takes on Alice, the insane Alice In Wonderland-themed leader of the Religion of Crime. It's a very personal war with plenty of twists and turns, leading to a devastating reveal in the book's climax.

Rucka is known for his strong female characters and he brings his A game in this book. Taking lead on such a prominent comic like Detective Comics, this skyrocketed Batwoman into being a fan favorite character. Her similarities to Bruce Wayne, being a wealthy socialite or having the same taste in women, makes way for some other differences, such as having an actual family or having a military background, to reiterate their contrast between the two characters. Even failing that, Williams' artwork brings this already fantastic book to a truly artistic level.

The character would continue to have home-runs with her New 52 series, beginning with Batwoman: Hydrology. So check that out too!
