Most of Marvel's alternate realities actually stem from their brilliant 'What If?' series of comics. In What If? #67 - titled What If... Captain America Were Revived today - we're treated to a particularly interesting one where Steve Rogers wasn't de-iced until 1994 (the year of the comic's publication).

In this reality, the world is ruled by Nazis and is in major need of a hero capable of punching many of them.

In the face.

Repeatedly.

Anyway, the Red Skull (who else?) is the leader of the Nazi dictatorship, which had succeeded because Cap wasn't able to join the Avengers like his mainstream counterpart did. Giant machines of murder roam the planet, and Victor von Doom is the man who reawakens Cap, placing him in control of an uncanny kind of Avengers comprised of the likes of Juggernaut, Abomination, and Vulture.

Eventually, Steve alerts to the deception and breaks off from the group, linking up with Namor, the Human Torch, Spider-Man, Wolverine and Jean Grey to thwart the Nazis once and for all. This concludes in What If? #68, and though this premise of Cap being revived at a later date would inspire the Ultimate version's origin too, it's a great idea to revisit nonetheless.
