In many ways, Captain America and Superman are counterparts. Both embody different aspects of the American Dream - Supes being an immigrant, embodying truth, justice and the American Way, and Steve the small kid from Brooklyn determined to make a difference - and though they differ greatly when it comes to their powers, it's easy to see why they're compared so often.

It's a comparison Marvel and DC were aware of for years, and so in their joint Amalgam Comics venture, they decided to mash the two together and create a new hero: Super-Soldier.

Super-Soldier is literally half Cap, half Supes, with his origin combining both the super soldier formula from Marvel Comics and the Kryptonian backstory from DC. There, the serum is devised thanks to an extraterrestrial encounter, and the willing volunteer is Clark Kent, who then develops the powers of both Captain America and Superman, and later goes on to fight alongside Sgt. Rock and the Howling Commandos - itself an amalgamation of DC's Easy Company comic featuring the eponymous sergeant, and Marvel's book starring Nick Fury.

Marvel and DC's Amalgam comics were great fun, and took the very idea of a crossover to a whole new level of brilliance.
