1. The Dawnbreaker - Dark Multiverse

The Dark Multiverse has quickly become one of the most enjoyable alternate-earth settings in DC's library, and it's all thanks to Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo.

Spinning out of the pages of Dark Nights: Metal were several tie-in comics that showcased the origins of the various evil Batmen intent on conquering the known omniverse. Their leader was the Batman Who Laughs, a twisted aberration of the Dark Knight moulded into a Joker-like madman, but the other Batmen of the Dark Multiverse all befell different fates.

There were versions were Batman became the Murder Machine, one where the version of Batman (in this case Batwoman) engaged in a war with Aquaman, and of course one where they became the new Green Lantern.

In this reality, a power ring comes to Bruce in the wake of his parents' murder. Tainted with darkness, Wayne corrupts the device to enable him to kill without mercy, fashioning a terrifying costume as Gotham City's own Bat-Lantern, where he operates as judge, jury and executioner.

The Green Lanterns should embody all that is right about superheroics, but it's often the case that tales exploring how their ethos can be twisted are the most interesting Elseworld stories of all. Dawnbreaker is no different, except for the fact you won't find a more terrifying version of the character out there.
