10 Insane Alternate Versions Of The X-Men You Won't Believe Exist
4. Witches And Demons In The 16th Century
One of the most interesting alternate realities was one of Neil Gaiman's making, which transplanted the Marvel Universe to the Elizabethan era. Included within were the X-Men of 1602, formed by Spaniard Carlos Javier.
Instead of being mutants his students were known as witchbreed, born with special abilities that saw them cast out of normal society. Enrolled at Master Carlos Javier's Select College for the Sons of Gentlefolk were Roberto Trefusis, who had mastery over ice and was the nephew of Sir Francis Drake; Scotius Summerisle, who wore a visor made of rubies and was branded with an X on his shoulder by witch hunters in Scotland; Hal McCoy, self-explanatory; "John" Grey, Jean Grey masquerading as a man ala Shakespeare comedies of the time; and Werner, who fancied "John" in both their guises.
After the death of Javier's friend Queen Elizabeth they were hunted down, only to be released when new King James of Scotland was betrayed by his top advisor and spymaster, Nicholas Fury. Essentially they're the renaissance fair version of the X-Men, complete with silly names and accents, and that is a heck of a lot of fun. And totally insane.
