When Spider-Man got his own series, the first thing he did was break into the Baxter Building in an attempt at showing the Fantastic Four that he would make a good choice for a fifth member. It didn't work out too well for Spidey, and the team didn't alter their roster.

There have been moments throughout the team's history, which have allowed for the inclusion of a fifth member. A reality where this was done in an unusual way was the MC2 universe of Earth-982, which was home to the Fantastic Five.

The key element of Earth-982 was that the heroes aged in real-time, making it possible for their children to take up their mantle. When Sue Storm was apparently killed in this reality, Johnny went his own way to form a new team he called the Fantastic Five.

The team had Johnny as its leader and was rounded out with Lyja, his Skrull wife, a teenage Franklin Richards, who went by the name Psi-Lord, a partially cybernetic Ben Grimm, and the brain of Reed Richards installed into a flying robot.

Eventually, the Fantastic Five grew beyond five members to include Johnny and Lyja's son, Torus, a revived Sue Storm, and Kristoff Vernard, the adopted son of Dr. Doom.
