10 Justice League Moments That Shocked The World

7. They Split In Half... Literally - Justice League #51-54 (2001)

Endgame Superman
DC Comics

A group of six-dimensional beings called the Cathexis traveled to the third dimension to destroy the Justice League because... they're evil. Okay, not a particularly creative motivation, but how the Cathexis attacked the superheroes is fascinating.

Using a psychic weapon called The Id, the Cathexis split each member of the League into two identities - their superhero identity and their secret identity. Not only was Kal-El split into Superman and Clark Kent, Superman was Kryptonian and Clark was human.

At first, The Id seemed like a blessing. Superman was able to protect the world 24/7 while Clark Kent could commit to his job and relationship with Lois Lane. Everyone gets what they want, right?

But this is the realm of comic books so there's always a catch. As more time passed by, each split persona became less stable. Because Bruce Wayne and Batman were separate, Bruce had no outlet to deal with the trauma of witnessing his parents' murder. When a pickpocket attempted to rob Bruce, he went into an uncontrollable rage and nearly killed him.

Realising they couldn't function without their literal other half, the League convinced their doppelgängers to fuse back with them.
