10 Key Members Of The Justice Society Of America

1. Stargirl (Courtney Whitmore)

Stargirl Starman
DC Comics

High school student Courtney Whitmore was not related to any of the original Starmen - a mantle passed down from hero to hero since the original Starman Ted Knight was created in 1941. She was instead the stepdaughter of another Golden Age hero - Stripesy - who back in the day was the sidekick to the Star-Spangled Kid.

Inheriting the original Star-Spangled Kid's Cosmic Converter Belt, Courtney took up that hero's mantle throughout 1999's Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. series. She later instead assumed the name and legacy of Starman, taking his Cosmic Rod and becoming Stargirl.

She joined the new JSA and trained with its heroes, striving as a superhero through her genuine want to do good.

With the Cosmic Converter Belt, Stargirl possessed super-strength and enhanced reflexes, and with the Cosmic Rod, she gained the ability to fly and project energy blasts.

Stargirl successfully marries the Golden Age and Modern Age of comic books, representing the legacy of the long line of Starmen who came before her, but also the Star-Spangled Kid and the values of 1940s crimefighting.

The recent CW series Stargirl adapted her origin story, and explored and celebrated the legacy of the Justice Society. The show, and the character of Stargirl, serves as a brilliant way of introducing these timeless characters to modern audiences.
