10 Key Members Of The Justice Society Of America

2. Hawkman & Hawkgirl

Hawkman Hawkgirl
DC Comics

The Golden Age Hawkman and Hawkgirl first appeared in Flash Comics #1 in 1940 as a crimefighting couple - archaeologist Carter Hall and his girlfriend Shiera Sanders. In actuality, they were the reincarnations of Egyptian nobility - Prince Khufu and Princess Chay-Ara.

Having been exposed to radiation from a crashed Thanagarian spaceship, the Egyptians - who worshipped the hawk-God Horus - were cursed to fall in love, live their lives, and die together throughout history.

The versions born into the early 20th Century joined fellow Mystery Men fighting during World War II as 'The Winged Wonders'. Using Thanagarian technology which allowed them to fly, Hawkman and Hawkgirl became costumed crimefighters.

When the Justice Society was formed, Hawkman was their first chairman - his peers respecting his abilities and years of wisdom and accepting him as their natural leader. Hawkgirl would join the team later and both would go on to be members of the All-Star Squadron, Justice League of America, and the modern versions of the JSA.

The characters have appeared prominently throughout DC's TV shows, including Justice League, Smallville, The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, and Stargirl.

Hawkman will also feature along with Doctor Fate and a version of the JSA in the upcoming Black Adam film.
