The suitably named Guts resides in a cruel and chaotic world overflowing with war, death and seemingly unending suffering across the board. After enduring an unspeakably grim childhood and adolescence, Guts becomes a mercenary wandering the war torn countryside of this medieval hellscape.

During his bleak travels, Guts is recruited (or rather, strong armed) into joining the lethal mercenary group, The Band of the Hawk, by its leader, Griffith. The 2 quickly develop a fearsome friendship ultimately changed forever by their defeat at the hands of the deadly Nosferatu Zodd. Guts is given warning by Zodd that death will come for him soon should he not rethink his violent partnership with Griffith.

An epic fantasy of the highest order, Berserk is also a grim and gritty meditation on the hardships of war. Filled to the brim with sorrow and savagery, the artwork is beautifully detailed and captures the ferocity of its action scenes perfectly.

Regarded as creator Kentaro Miura’s masterpiece, Berserk has been a terrifying, thrilling and often heartbreaking experience for readers everywhere since it began in 1989. Unbelievably harsh and beautifully realised, Berserk is a masterpiece not suitable for the faint hearted.
