10 Marvel Event Comics That Actually Lived Up To The Hype

7. Secret Invasion

It's thought Marvel will be incorporating a lot of the Secret Invasion story into the MCU going forward and it's easy to understand why.

The build-up to this arc was a very long one, with Marvel starting the tie-in's eight months before the release of Secret Invasion #1. Multiple on-going titles where branded "Secret Invasion: The Infiltration", leaving a trail of clues, alongside the plot points laid out in the New Avengers run.

With such a long marketing period, expectations were high leading up to the event. Fans were desperate to find out how the Skrull invasion would pan out, as well as which characters were real and which characters were Skrull.

Marvel tried to double down on the online marketing too, offering two short stories released via the Marvel website and on the biggest social media site at the time, Myspace.

The first was a seven-page prologue comic, while Myspace hosted a video blog from a young teenager, who was concerned about her brother's recent behaviour.

Bendis and the company put a lot of effort into generation hype for this story, thankfully it completely paid off. Secret Invasion released to middling critical reviews, but fans couldn't get enough, with issue #1 selling over 250,000 copies.
