10 Marvel Event Comics That Actually Lived Up To The Hype

4. Secret Wars

Captain America War of the Realms
Marvel Comics

There was a lot of pressure on Hickman for this one. The original Secret Wars is one of the most iconic storylines in comic book history, so the writer had a lot to live up to.

Not only that, Secret Wars was the culmination of the incursions all across the Marvel multiverse. It immediately followed the Time Runs Out storyline, which had already exceeded expectations.

With the legacy the original Secret Wars, fans were either extremely excited, or incredible dubious of the Hickman's reimagining. However, the task was left in faithful hands and readers were hooked from the second the Free Comic Book Day prelude story came out.

There was a tonne of material leading up to the main story, as Marvel were eager to make sure there was as much attention on Secret Wars as possible.

To do this, they adapted ten ongoing books from Ant-Man to Silver Surfer, showing each character's last days before the final incursion.

By the time Secret Wars #1 finally released, fans were completely abuzz as everyone was desperate to see what would become of the entire Marvel Universe in the aftermath. As always, Hickman didn't disappoint and the event was a huge success, still receiving praise to this day.
