The Weapon X program is responsible for some of the most tragic backstories in comic book history and Wade Wilson's is no exception. Not a lot is known about his life prior to the events that led to him becoming Deadpool but the one thing that is known is that he was riddled with cancer, and it is this that puts him in the hands of the Weapon X program.

What emerges from a series of failed experiments is a madman killer, who breaks the fourth wall at every given opportunity. He also has a myriad of voices that talk to him constantly and he is in the unenviable position of knowing that he's a comic book character.

Before he joins the fight for good, Wade is an assassin who has no qualms about taking on any contract that he can find as long as the price is right. This may be what contributes to his mental instability later on, as he carries a lot of guilt with him due to his previous career choice.

Though he is now a beloved anti-hero and occasional member of the Avengers, Wade Wilson's past continues to haunt him, and yet also drive him on to become a better version of himself.
