When you think about comics that have drastically changed heroes' histories, One More Day is pretty much the zenith, as the storyline basically retconned countless years of Spider-Man's history.

When Marvel's editor-in-chief Joe Quesada decided that Peter Parker's marriage was limiting how relatable he was to fans, he decided to axe the years-long matrimony, in a storyline that totally rewrote everything that came before it in order to fix what he perceived was wrong with the character. It proved to be less than popular with Spidey's readers, because fans had seen Peter married to Mary Jane since 1987, and rewriting this seemed like a serious cop-out of one of the biggest events in the character's life.

What One More Day also serves to remind us is that while changing Marvel history is exciting, it's not always needed, and it's not always good.

It serves as both a testament to how quality the majority of major comics are, and as a reminder of how legitimately questionable One More Day was, both in purpose and in practice.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
