5. Secret Empire - 2017
There are few storylines that proved as controversial as Captain America - the bastion of the American dream, and the embodiment of its greatest values - turning sides and working for the Nazi supergroup Hydra.
Naturally, this was one huge change that wasn't received well, as the idea of Captain America becoming a Neo-Nazi naturally didn't sit easy with many fans. With the series mainly revolving around this evil Steve Rogers rebuilding the word in Hydra's image, it was hoped by a considerable number of readers that the series would simply end with everything reverting back to normal, allowing them to forget the comic ever existed in the first place.
And while this was true for the most part, there were plenty of huge changes that remained after the villainous alternate Captain America was defeated.
Firstly, Black Widow's death in the series remained canon - as it actually does to this day. Similarly, with Steve having at last returned to us as the proper Captain America, his long hiatus from being a superhero finished, finally regaining the mantle from Sam Wilson.
