10 More X-Men Fates Worse Than Death

5. When Magneto Realised He Was The Villain - Ultimatum #5 (2009)

Magneto has attempted to eradicate humankind to allow his fellow mutants to take over the world more times than one can count. Even though he has slaughtered thousands of people and is labelled as the world's most dangerous mutant, he absolutely believes his cause is just. Since mutants are the next stage in evolution, he deems it logical for his subspecies of humanity to replace mankind.

But what if he was wrong? After Magneto caused devastation across the globe in the Ultimatum series, Nick Fury prepared to defeat the X-Men's nemesis, not with violence, but with knowledge. After tracking Magneto down, the one-eyed director of SHIELD had the two of them form a psychic link with Jean Grey so they could look into each other's minds. As Magneto peered into Fury's memories, he learned the harsh truth - mutants were created in a laboratory, not by nature.

Acknowledging that he had dedicated his entire life to a lie, Magneto burst into tears, believing he had nothing to live for. After imploring the X-Men to put him out of his misery, Cyclops blasted Magneto with an optic blast, incinerating him to dust.
