When Jean Grey seemingly died, all the X-Men were devastated. But no one was more distraught than Cyclops since Jean was the love of his life.

So, when he met a woman with an incredible resemblance to Jean called Madelyne Pryor, Scott Summers instantly found himself attracted to her. However, Professor X was apprehensive about Madelyne since he knew nothing about her and couldn't probe her mind.

Nevertheless, Scott fell head over heels in love with Madelyne and eventually married her. When they had a child called Nathan, Mister Sinister appeared, revealing that Madelyne was a clone of Jean created by him. He devised this entire convoluted plan, believing Jean and Scott's offspring was destined to help him destroy Apocalypse. When Apocalypse discovered this, he infected baby Nathan with a virus, apparently killing him.

So, not only did Madelyne lose her child, she learned that she wasn't even a real person. Despite being inconsolable, Cyclops thought this was the perfect time to abandon his wife, since he found out Jean was still alive. Madelyne was left so traumatised, Sinister was able to twist her mind, transforming her into a deranged supervillain called the Goblin Queen.
