10 More X-Men Fates Worse Than Death

3. Destroying The Mutant Gene - House Of M #8 (2005)

Adamantium Bones Ripped Out
Marvel Comics

After Scarlet Witch had a nervous breakdown, she used her reality warping powers to create a world where mutants ruled supreme. Because of Wanda Maximoff's instability, the world started to fracture, compelling her to return it to normal... with one exception.

Believing superpowers like hers caused more harm than good, Wanda depowered 99.9% of mutants on Earth with the phrase, 'No more mutants.' Not only did hundreds of thousands of mutants lose their abilities, Wanda's spell deactivated the X-gene in human DNA, meaning no new mutants were being born. Even though her father, Magneto, dreamed that mutantkind would one day rule the world, his daughter seemingly condemned her race to extinction with three simple words.

This incident, which was known as Decimation, caused all sorts of problems Wanda never expected. Many mutants like Blob became depressed and suicidal, since they felt naked without their abilities. Some of them turned to a drug called Mutant Growth Hormone to get a semblance of their original powers but ended up overdosing to death. Bigots saw the Decimation as a sign of god, inspiring them to hunt and kill any mutants they could find.

Wanda eventually reversed her spell but only after mutants endured years of suffering.
