Next up is one of the craziest - and darkest - adventures Batman has ever had.

Batman: Damned is an extremely gritty and highly stylised collection from artist Lee Bermejo and writer Brian Azzarello.

The three Black Label books contain insane imagery regarding some of DC's more bizarre characters and sees Batman teaming up with Constantine, Zatana, Swamp Thing, and a terrifying version of Deadman.

The manner in which this dark descent into the supernatural begins is with Batman suffering a near-fatal fall off of Gotham's bridge following a deadly confrontation with the Joker. Bleeding heavily, Batman is thrown into the icy depths of Gotham's harbor before reemerging and collapsing on the shore.

In Batman's own words he should have died from the fall and may have suffered a broken back at least. Despite all this, the paramedics that find him make the mistake of attempting to remove his mask, causing the injured anti-hero to leap out the back of a speeding ambulance and be left to bleed out in an alleyway.
