Kahndaq was the birthplace of Black Adam 3,600 years ago. In 1600 B.C., it was destroyed and Adam’s family was killed by Ahk-Ton. Black Adam went to such extreme measures to protect Kahndaq that the Wizard Shazam was forced to strip him of his powers and lock him in suspended animation for centuries.

In modern times, Adam was freed, regained his powers and after a lengthy career as a villain, Black Adam joined the Justice Society of America. At this time, Kahndaq was run by a brutal dictator named Asim Muhunnad. Adam, Atom Smasher, and several newer members of the Society quit to invade Kahndaq and overthrow Muhunnad's rule. Atom Smasher killed the dictator and Adam became Kahndaq's “guardian” as the people now saw him as a god. He renamed the capital city Shiruta for his long-dead wife.

Adam’s rule was initially a brutal one with weekly executions that Adam performed personally. His new wife Isis, and her brother Osiris, with whom he shared his power, tempered his rage. Isis’ powers turned the land into a verdant paradise and Kahndaq knew peace until the Four Horsemen from Bialya killed Isis and Osiris. Black Adam killed every person living in the nation of Bialya.
