10 Most Disturbing Moments In Batman Comics

6. Killing Alfred - Various

The most recent spot of trauma in the majority of Batman fans' hearts has to be the heartbreak that was Batman #86, which would see Bruce's beloved butler get his neck snapped like a particularly crisp Rivita by the muscled Bane. This decision was initially supposed to be - like most comic deaths - pretty much immediately revealed to be a ruse, but when DC saw the reaction it got out of fans, they thought otherwise, condemning comics' favourite Englishman to an untimely demise.

However, it is worth mentioning that this was not the only time that DC have killed off Batman - not by a long shot. In Detective Comics #328, Bill Finger and company would solve the problem of Alfred being thought to encourage the homoerotic subtext of the Batman series by having him be crushed by a rock, which is exactly as brutal as getting your neck snapped by a bodybuilder.

This first example actually became much more messed up, though, as the Batman television show producers wanted the butler brought back into the comics, leading to a convoluted plot where Pennyworth would be transformed into a purple-speedo wearing villain, only to be saved by Batman and Robin.

Working for the Waynes doesn't look easy, that's for sure.
