10 Most Emotional Wolverine Moments
4. Weapon X Project
The origin of what is arguably Wolverine's most famous characteristic, his adamantium claws, was revealed in 1991's Marvel Comics Presents #72.
The Weapon X project entailed Wolverine being put through excruciating pain in order to bond adamantium to his skeleton. While this helped create the iconic image of Wolverine Marvel fans know and love, the brutal torture he had to endure for this result shows his adamantium claws in a darker light.
Although the claws were seen as quite sinister beforehand, they still retained some element of the camp which comics (especially those pre-1980s) contain in such abundance. This changed entirely following Marvel Comics Presents #72
Anyone who has read this issue finds themselves with the indelible images of Wolverine's transformation imprinted in their brain, largely due to the incredible and vivid artwork of the story, providing a visual feast as well as capturing the painful essence of the issue. Indeed, Logan's impassioned cries of agony as the metal bonds to his skeletal frame are as unforgettable as the visuals.
It's a shame that the raw passion and the magic of this character-defining and exceptionally emotional story was lost in translation through the story's film adaptation, X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
