10 Most Iconic Spider-Man Covers - Ranked

8. Amazing Spider-Man #72

Marvel Comics

You might think that the first appearance of the Shocker would be his best cover art. However, as brilliant as that cover is, Amazing Spider-Man #72 outshines Herman's introductory issue. This time round, John Romita Sr went for a simpler approach in order to create a more striking contrast. Shocker is doing what he does best, taking aim at Spidey's logo, which is starting to shatter into pieces.

Within the issue, Shocker bursts into the home of Captain Stacey in order to steal an ancient tablet. He gets his loot, but the visit is cut short when Gwen disrupts things.

He tries to sell it on, but is told by the pawnshop owner that it's too hot and no-one will take it. J. Jonah Jameson goes crazy in the hospital when one of his writer's labels Spider-Man a hero and Aunt May goes on a little trip to Florida, which made a change from her usual appearances at Death's door.

This issue and its cover were so influential that Stan Lee included it as one of only two Spider-Man issues that made the cut for his Origins of Marvel Comics retrospective in 1974
