3. Two-Face Outs Montoya - Half A Life

Batman The Animated Series Batgirl
DC Comics

While not a storyline based around Batman, Half a Life takes place in a Gotham City in which Batman is very much a key player.

This tale came about in the Gotham Central title which placed a spotlight on the GCPD whilst the Dark Knight did Dark Knight things in the background. When thinking of the Gotham City Police Department, one of the first names who comes to mind is Renee Montoya.

Created for Batman: The Animated Series, Montoya has become a staple of DC Comics in the subsequent decades, even eventually becoming the second person to take on the heroic Question moniker. What's also notable about Renee, is that she's comic books' first ever Latino lesbian character.

With Gotham Central, Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker fleshed-out Montoya in ways not seen before, and so 2002 had it revealed to readers that Renee was a lesbian. At this time, though, this was not common knowledge amongst the characters within the pages of DC Comics.

In Half a Life, a photo of Renee kissing her girlfriend Daria is shown to the GCPD, publicly outing the Detective. With it initially suspected a Private Investigator is responsible for sharing this image, said PI winds up dead and Montoya is the prime suspect in this murder.

With her life thrown upside down, it's revealed Two-Face is responsible for all of this. Harvey wanted Renee as his own, and thus outed her and framed her for murder as some bizarre way to take everything away from her.

To the credit of the creative team, this whole situation was handled extremely classily and Half a Life won numerous award. In terms of inappropriate actions of characters, though, clearly Harvey Dent way, way overstepped the mark here.
