2. The Death Of Stephanie Brown - War Crimes

Batman The Animated Series Batgirl
DC Comics

Stephanie Brown had quite the traumatic life after being introduced into the pages of DC Comics back in 1992.

Dubbing herself the Spoiler, the teenager looked to help fight the good fight as one of Gotham City's heroes. Things were never simple for Stephanie, though. To run through some of the tribulations of young Miss Brown, her father was the villainous Cluemaster, she became pregnant and had to give her child up for adoption, her later relationship with Robin was one shrouded in mystery, and she eventually became yet another pawn in the world of Batman.

In terms of that relationship with Robin, it was the Tim Drake version of the Boy Wonder who Steph ended up dating. The only thing is, she never knew it was Tim, for Robin would keep his identity secret.

After Tim quit being Robin, Bruce Wayne turned to Stephanie to become the new Robin. This was largely done by Bruce as a way to take a shot at Tim, and Brown would end up fired from the Robin gig after making one too many mistakes.

Determined to prove herself, Stephanie went after the twisted Black Mask during War Games. Captured and tortured, Steph made it to Dr. Leslie Thompkins before dying from her wounds, with Batman present for Brown's final breaths.

What makes this particularly inappropriate, is that the War Crimes arc - which followed War Games - revealed Leslie could have saved Stephanie, but instead chose to let her die from her injuries in order to teach Batman a lesson about how his work can get people killed.
