Marvel Comics

Unknown to everyone at the time, the living Cosmic Cube, Kobik had altered Steve Rogers and changed him into a Hydra agent. This Captain America had set up his own shadow government and was ready to take over the United States. At this time, Deadpool was part of the Avengers Unity team and was fiercely loyal to Cap and protective of his newfound hero status.

In Deadpool #31, SHIELD agent and long-time Captain America fan, Phil Coulson had begun to suspect that something was wrong with Cap and has begun compiling proof to that effect. Wade had become so blindly loyal to Captain America that he would do anything he asked and when Rogers found that Coulson had discovered his secret, he sent Deadpool to kill him. Despite Coulson’s best efforts to evade the assassin, Wade killed the agent.

Deadpool was so consumed with guilt over his actions that he slowly turned away from Captain America and Hydra and began assisting the Resistance movement. He gave former SHIELD director Maria Hill the opportunity to release many of the planet’s most powerful heroes who had been captured by Hydra and the tide of the battle turned. However, due to Wilson’s actions, Hill trapped Deadpool in a collapsed parking garage and kept him from being a hero and bringing down the Secret Empire.
