10 Most Insane Alternate Universe Batmen

5. The Merciless

Batman Grim Reaper
DC Comics

The Merciless debuted with the Dark Knights in Dark Days: The Casting #1. He began as the Bruce Wayne of Earth -12, with a typical Bruce Wayne origin story. However, he was notable in prizing mercy. As with most superhero virtues, this existed to be challenged.

For over two years, Batman and Earth -12 Wonder Woman hunted down Ares. The god of war was stronger than ever after forging a helmet, which dramatically amplified his already impressive powers. During the mission, Bruce and Diana fell in love. The two closed in on the god and managed to separate him from his new power source. However, in a superpowered Shakespearian tragedy, Bruce believed Ares had killed Diana and seized the helmet in anger. He decimated the god, but consequently his mercy-driven moral code went to hell too. The corruption was made complete when he murdered Diana rather than remove the helmet.

After exhausting Earth -12’s villains, he slaughtered superheroes, his fellow Greek gods, and the Amazon race. At the edge of his universe, he was recruited to the Dark Knights by The Batman Who Laughs. The Merciless, though inhuman in his heavy armour, bears a combination of the lovers’ emblems on his chest.
