10 Most Intense Comic Books Of All Time

4. Spawn #4

Captain America Iron Man Civil War
Image Comics

Over the course of its many issues, Spawn has battled with the combined powers of Heaven, Hell, and everything else in-between. There is rarely an issue of Spawn that doesn't have some intense action in it, but the best example came early in the series thanks to Spawn #4.

Readers were still trying to figure out exactly who and what Al Simmons, aka Spawn, was. It wasn't entirely clear in the first three issues, but it also wan't clear who the Clown/Violator was. Issue #4 revealed a lot of these details in the most dramatic way.

In the final pages of the previous issue, the Violator revealed himself and plucked Spawn's heart from his body, but all this really did was make a small mess on the floor.

"He doesn't need a heart?"

The artwork by series creator and writer, Todd McFarlane, was glorious as always, but the following pages that tell the tale of Spawn and his deal with Malebolgia set the tone for the entire series. There would be hundreds of brilliant issues of Spawn to follow, but you won't find many better than the fourth issue.
