Plenty of everyday objects have been given a terrifying makeover in horror from cars, dolls, and a car tyre. Anything can be made scary with the right creativity. In the case of Ito's short story The Human Chair, the manga artist was able to transform a very comfortable looking armchair into a symbol of dread.

Written as a sequel to the 1925 short story of the same name by Edogawa Ranpo, this outing sees a writer wander into a furniture shop in search of a new chair.

It's here the salesman invites her to look at an impressive armchair as he recounts the strange story of its previous owner, a celebrated writer who grew paranoid that someone was hiding in her chair after receiving an anonymous manuscript with that very premise.

Unfortunately for her, it turns out there really was someone hiding there, revealing themselves by stabbing her husband when he sat down. However, when the police arrive and find the hiding place, the assailant has vanished.

Cut back to the shop where the salesman reveals this chair's secret: the corpses of the writer and her visitor entombed together in the chair to be together for ever.

You can sit back down now.
