10 Most Powerful Beings Thor Has Defeated

6. The Midgard Serpent - Thor #380 (1987)

Thor Galactus
Marvel Comics

In Norse mythology, Thor's most defining moment is when he died defeating Jormungandr the Midgard Serpent; an otherworldly reptile so large, it's body wrapped around the entire planet. Because the insidious snake's body kept the oceans from spilling over, its demise led to the drowning of Earth. This cataclysm is better known as Ragnarok.

In the comics, the Serpent exists in an ethereal version of Earth because... well... if it didn't, it would crush everything in the world in two seconds. But when this colossal creature partially materialised on the physical plane to challenge Thor to a duel, Asgard's champion had no choice, knowing the Serpent was destined to destroy Midgard. Impervious to all injuries save for Mjolnir, the Odinson knew he was the only one up to the task of defeating it.

Even though Thor knew it was prophesied that he would perish in battle against The Serpent, the Lightning-Caller didn't hesitate to take on the monstrous creature. Despite the fact he was seemingly poisoned to the death by The Serpent's venom in the final pages, we all know heroes never stay dead for long in comics.
