The MCU incarnation of Steve Rogers is a near-perfect distillation of what has made the Captain America character tick, and this is due in part to an excellent character arc and Chris Evans' wonderful performance as the man out of time. Despite his "golden retriever in human form" persona, the hero has not shied away from drawing blood if need be.

An example of this in the juggernaut film franchise came in 2012's The Avengers, where Cap and the newly formed Avengers went up against Loki and the Chitauri army. While he was no match for the Asgardian, the Sentinel of Liberty proved to be more than capable of dealing with the alien armada's foot soldiers, despite their superhuman physical characteristics and advanced weaponry.

Highlights from this battle include Captain America using his shield to redirect Iron Man's repulsor beam onto a wave of Chitauri soldiers and a particularly rough clash with the extraterrestrials while saving trapped New Yorkers from their grip.

While the Battle of New York left him a little worse for wear, the super-soldier more than proved why he was a living legend in this epic clash.
