6. War Machine - Armor Wars (2015)
Few would expect to find Tony Stark's best friend on such a list, but in a multiverse of limitless possibilities, it stands to reason that there would be a James "Rhodey" Rhodes who would antagonize the Armoured Avenger at some point. This was most certainly the case in the 2015 Armor Wars miniseries, which was itself part of the mega-crossover event, Secret Wars.
The miniseries followed the technologically advanced realm of Technopolis, a domain whose inhabitants were forced to wear Iron Man suits due to the presence of an airborne virus. Its Thor Corps (God Emperor Doom's Mjolnir-powered police force) operative was War Machine and he began investigating the nature of the disease and its connection to the Stark family.
This intensified after the Spider-Man of this realm was supposedly murdered by Kingpin's men for also conducting his own investigation.
After further digging, Jim discovered that Tony was responsible for Peter's death as well as the severity of the disease plaguing the domain. To prevent this from leaking, Tony killed Rhodes but it was all in vain as his family's role in developing the disease was revealed to Technopolis.
