His investigation eventually led him to Doctor Abraham Cornelius, one of the key players in the Weapon X program that gave Wolvie his adamantium. Attempting to replicate the process, Cornelius found the one missing element was Wolverine's healing factor. Finding that had gone, Cornelius attempted to escape by activating the adamantium bonding process on three of his experimental subjects.
