9. He Was Crucified

After the Hellfire Club captured the X-Men in Uncanny X-Men #132, Wolverine made mincemeat of the group's Hellfire Commandos in order to retrieve his friends.

Years later, the club's White King, Donald Pierce, used cybernetic technology to rebuild the bodies of his commandos, turning them into robotic soldiers. He added them to his mutant-killing army, The Reavers, and tracked down Wolverine so he could exact his revenge.

They pummelled him to a pulp before chaining him to a X-shaped cross in the desert. Not only was the pain unbearable, the intense desert heat caused Wolverine to suffer hallucinations of his teammates coming to rescue him.

When Pierce saw Wolverine was still alive after the first night, he impaled his feet and hands to the crucifix with wooden stakes. As Pierce and his men headed for shelter for the night, Jubilee appeared, preparing to free Wolverine.

However, Wolverine used his berserker rage to pull himself off the cross. But he was so frail from his injuries, he needed Jubilee's help to stand.

This was one of the most iconic moments in X-Men since readers at the time had never seen Wolverine appear so weak.
