10 Most Ridiculous Ways Superheroes Have Come Back From The Dead

5. Jean Grey Was In A Cocoon All Along

Jean Grey's death is one of her defining character moments, despite the fact that it never happened to her.

The Dark Phoenix saga is a classic X-Men story. It began when Jean Grey seemingly sacrificed herself to land a space shuttle the team were on. However, Jean was saved at the last minute by a cosmic entity called the Phoenix. The Phoenix also boosted her powers considerably.

Unfortunately, Jean was eventually driven insane by her powers and she destroyed an entire planet. The Shi'ar empire weren't best pleased by that and ordered Jean to be executed. To once again save her team, Jean allowed herself to be killed.

That all turned out to be a lie though when the real Jean Grey was found in a cocoon on the ocean floor. In a transparently hasty retcon, it was revealed that the Phoenix had placed Jean in suspended animation to heal from the massive dose of radiation she got hit by while landing the shuttle. The Phoenix then made a body for itself and took Jean's place, soon forgetting that it wasn't human (to be fair, Cyclops' cool glasses are pretty distracting).

Jean returned and Cyclops heroically abandoned his wife and child to be with her, restoring the status quo. Then she later died anyway.
