9. Batman Has Plans To Take Down Every Leaguer - Tower Of Babel

identity crisis comic
DC Comics

Batman’s paranoia here is rather understandable given that previous entry. All the same, it leads to total disaster in Mark Waid’s highly acclaimed Tower of Babel story arc. Courtesy of Ra’s Al Ghul, each member of the League falls victim to a brutal, highly personalised attack. It is quickly revealed that the architect of these beatdowns was Batman himself who was in turn robbed by his thousand year old foe.

Behind the League’s back, Batman had in fact spent years compiling data on every strength and weakness of every super powered League member. From there he devised the strategies to neutralise them should they ever turn to the dark side.

Batman himself is too distracted recovering the stolen bodies of his parents to help his teammates. While the team eventually recover enough to defeat Ra’s Al Ghul’s latest depopulating strategy, the rift between them proves too much. Holding a vote on Batman’s status, Superman ultimately decides to side with those who want Batman off the team.

Given Batman’s actions nearly cost the lives of the team and most of planet Earth, expulsion seemed a valid punishment.
