10 Most Shocking Betrayals In DC Comics
2. Hal Jordan Massacres The Entire Green Lantern Corps - Emerald Twilight
When Cyborg Superman and Mongul (DC’s rip-off of Marvel’s Thanos who in turn was initially inspired by DC’s Darkseid), team up to turn Earth into Warworld, one of their initial strikes involves the total destruction of Coast City. A devastated Hal Jordan would ultimately defeat Mongul but it was too little, too late for the good people of Coast City, who were caught in the ensuing carnage.
Consumed with grief and survivors’ guilt, Jordan would use his power ring to conjure up a false city. Disturbed by his behaviour, several fellow Lanterns would attempt to stop this and in a rage, Jordan killed them all. Growing increasingly cruel and unstable, Jordan goes onto absorbing the Central Power Battery of Oa. In the process, Jordan becomes the deadly villain, Parallax, the living embodiment of fear. He would defeat fellow Earth Lantern, Guy Gardner and became a fearsome villain in DC comics for some time after.
In the meantime, Kyle Rayner became the (at that point) final Green Lantern for several years until Geoff Johns’ Rebirth story arc restored the classic Green Lantern mythos decimated by Jordan’s villainy.
